ODM leader Raila Odinga has opined that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum will not be forced on Kenyans.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Odinga noted that as the proponents of the referendum, they will accept the decision of Kenyans even if they reject the proposed Constitutional amendments in the BBI.

He, however, expressed optimism that Kenyans will make the right decision which in his view is voting yes.

“If the country says no, they would have passed their verdict, the world will not stop moving because the country has said no, there will be different reasons why the country would have said no… I believe that Kenyans will make the right choice, I have confidence in the Kenyan people to make the right choice at the right time,” he said.

Addressing the cost of the referendum, Odinga noted that it should not cost more than Sh2 billion which he termed as peanuts to the government.

“The expenses for doing those things like a referendum, even election are actually peanuts to the government,” he said.

Meanwhile, the BBI referendum is fast picking pace and could be held in mid-2021.

At the moment, the IEBC is verifying the signatures provided by the BBI team, after which they’ll submit the Bill to the County Assemblies if the signatures meet the required threshold.
