ODM leader Raila Odinga is in Lilongwe, Malawi's capital.

He landed in the southeastern African nation on the morning of Sunday, June 16.

Raila was in the country to grace the memorial service of the country's vice president, the late Saulos Chilima.

Leaders and citizens gathered at the Bingu National Stadium to pay their last respects to their fallen compatriot.

Raila had earlier addressed his message of condolence to President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawian people.

"It is with deepest shock and consternation that we have learned of the tragic death of your deputy and his entourage in a plane crash. Please accept our deepest condolences to you and the people of Malawi for this great loss!" tweeted Raila.

The late Saulos Chilima's memorial service was held in the Bingu National Stadium on Sunday, June 16, ahead of his burial the following day.

Chilima perished in a chopper crash with nine other government officials.

The country's defence force plane they were onboard lost contact with the airport on June 10, prompting a multi-agency search.

President Chakwera immediately cancelled his official trip to the Bahamas to monitor the search mission.

Later Tuesday afternoon, June 11, Chakera told the nation that the search mission had ended in horror as the rescuers found the wreck of the plane near a hill in the vast Chikangawa forest.

The president said none of the chopper's occupants could have survived owing to the wreck of the aircraft.

Chilima will be laid to rest in his native district of Ntcheu, south of Lilongwe, on Monday, June 17.

The politician and economist served as Malawi's vice president for ten years; between 2014 to 2019, and 2020 until his death.

He was to contest for the president's seat in the next year's vote.
