Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached by the Senate on grounds of gross violation of the constitution, misconduct, and abuse of office.
Senators voted to uphold the impeachment of Governor Kawira on Wednesday, August 21.
The Senate Majority Leader, Aaron Cheruiyot, moved the motion to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza, which was seconded by Senator Nderitu Kinyua.
On charge 1, the Meru Governor was accused of gross violation of the constitution and other laws, with 26 senators voting yes, 4 voting no, and 14 abstaining.
On the second charge of gross misconduct against Governor Kawira, 26 senators voted yes, 2 voted no, and 14 abstained.

On the third charge against the Governor, abuse of office, 27 senators voted yes, 1 voted no, and 14 abstained.
Following the voting on the three charges, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that Kawira Mwangaza had ceased to hold office.
"The Senate has tonight voted to uphold the decision of the County Assembly of Meru to remove from office by way of impeachment, the Governor of Meru County, Kawira Mwangaza," Senate speaker Amason Kingi announced.
The Meru County Assembly on Thursday, August 8, voted to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza for the third time in less than two years.
49 out of 69 MCAs voted in favor of Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment while 17 voted No. Three Meru County MCAs on the other hand did not vote during the impeachment motion.
Prior to Wednesday's impeachment, Kawira had survived two impeachment motions at the Senate.
