On Tuesday, December 3, President Joe Biden announced over USD1 billion in funding targetting various humanitarian initiatives in Africa.
According to a statement by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the funding will address food insecurity in 31 countries including Kenya.
The over Ksh129 billion funding will also help various humanitarian activities in refugee camps.
"At the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in 2022, President Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to our African partners to accelerate progress toward achieving food security, including addressing the immediate and acute food insecurity crisis through humanitarian assistance," read the statement in part.

"Africa is the region with the largest percentage of the population facing hunger."
Additionally, the funding will assist affected populations in meeting essential needs, such as education, shelter and mental health services.
"With the Commodity Credit Corporation funding, USAID is purchasing, shipping, and distributing U.S. agricultural commodities from American farmers to provide life-saving food assistance for food-insecure populations in East and Central Africa," read the statement in part.
Biden announced the funding while touring Angola during his first African tour.
The African trip is expected to be his last tour as President Donald Trump is scheduled to take the oath of office in January.
