The lawmaker accused the police of contravening the law by arresting them while exercising their democratic right.


Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has been arrested.

The Senator was arrested on Monday, December 30, while participating in the protests against abductions in Nairobi.

Following the arrest, the Senator was booked at the Central Police Station where he managed to go live on his X account.

He revealed that they had been arrested alongside other protesters in Nairobi.

The lawmaker accused the police of contravening the law by arresting them while exercising their democratic right.

"Hamuwezi dhulumu Katiba halafu museme muko kazi. We cannot cooperate with anybody," he stated.

Omtatah was among Kenyans who joined the Monday protests occasioned by the recent abductions allegedly committed by security organs.

Earlier, former presidential hopeful Rueben Kigame alleged that he was arrested in Eldoret while leading the protests. He was released afterwards.

Meanwhile, police have distanced themselves from the abductions.

According to a statement by the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, none of his officers were holding Kenyans alleged to have been abducted in recent weeks.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Police Service is not involved in any abduction, and there is no police station in the country holding the reported abductees,” he stated.
