IEBC intends to register over 5 million new voters once new commissioners get into office.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revealed that it requires Ksh61.7 billion to effectively conduct the 2027 General Election.

While appearing before a committee of the National Assembly on Tuesday, February 25, IEBC Deputy CEO Obadiah Keitany explained that the money would be used to clear pending bills and also purchase and replace some of the election material.

He also added that the electoral body needed money to pay election officials who are hired to oversee the elections at the constituency, county and polling station levels.

According to the Deputy CEO, Ksh 7 billion has been budgeted for the poll officials. During the 2022 polls, over 500,000 poll officials were employed by IEBC.

"Going by the last election, we had 500,000 temporary polls officials and the budget if you look at it is around Ksh7 billion," he stated.

Equally, he indicated that the finances would also be used to conduct voter registration ahead of the polls.

“The Commission projects an additional 5.7 million new voters to have a total of 28 million in the 2027 General Election,” the Deputy CEO remarked.

On the other hand, IEBC detailed that it required close to Ksh 7 billion to replace some of the KIEMS kits that were used in the last elections.

Notably, Kenya's elections are one of the most expensive polls in Africa and the world. This is attributed to the technology and personnel required during the elections.

For instance, election papers with various security features are usually printed by international firms.
