The two officers are accused of ordering the unlawful disposal of waste near Stima Plaza.

Two senior Nairobi County officers have been interdicted following the illegal dumping of garbage near Stima Plaza.

Speaking before the Committee on Administration and Internal Security at County Hall on Monday, March 3, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja condemned the act, emphasizing that it goes against the county’s policies and values.

“Two officers have been interdicted over the illegal dumping of garbage because this is not what we stand for. On behalf of the staff, I apologize. That should not have happened,” he said.

On the other hand, Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, confirmed that criminal investigations were launched immediately after the incident.

“I was in Nigeria at the time, but we initiated investigations immediately after the illegal dumping was reported,” Kanja said.

This comes barely a week after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that police arrested some officials from Nairobi County after garbage was dumped at the Stima Plaza gate.

Speaking at DCI Headquarters on Thursday, February 27, the CS stated that the arrests were made on the same day the garbage was dumped.

He added that some of the county trucks had also been impounded as investigations into the incident continue, reiterating that action would be taken against all those who were involved in the act.

"The county Government of Nairobi has the responsibility of keeping everyone in Nairobi Safe. They also have a responsibility of public health. That was totally uncouth.

"At the very highest level, there was a report that was made by KPLC. That report led to the arrest of officers from Nairobi for questioning. Some of the lorries have also been detained," the CS said.

On Wednesday, February 26, Sakaja expressed that the dumping of waste outside the Stima Plaza gate was not intentional.

Addressing the media after a meeting with Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, Sakaja detailed that the county government had intended to have the trucks parked outside the gate.

He acknowledged that one of the officials took advantage and poured the garbage outside the gate, adding that the matter would be handled internally.

"It was unfortunate that one of the trucks tipped garbage. That was not the intention and that is why in less than 30 minutes all that garbage was collected. That is not how Nairobi County operates and the action will be dealt with internally," he said.
