President William Ruto held high-level talks with King Letsie III of Lesotho at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday, March 19.

In a statement after the meeting, Ruto emphasized the warm ties between the two nations and their commitment to strengthening cooperation.

“We affirmed the strong and cordial relations between our two nations and deliberated on ways of enhancing them,” he said.  

As part of efforts to deepen collaboration, the two leaders instructed their respective Foreign Ministers to convene the Joint Commission on Cooperation. 

According to Ruto, the platform will enable Kenya and Lesotho explore new areas of partnership.

“Consequently, we directed our Foreign Ministers to convene the Joint Commission on Cooperation to explore more areas of collaboration,” he added.

Ruto mentioned that the discussions also focused on school feeding programs, expressing satisfaction with the positive impact of the programs.

“We also discussed school feeding programmes in Kenya and Lesotho and expressed satisfaction with the impact they have had in education, including boosting school attendance, improving learning outcomes, and enhancing health and nutrition,” he noted.

This meeting comes a day after Kenya and the Netherlands signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a Letter of Intent.

In an update on Tuesday, March 18, State House said the MoUs include the establishment of a Joint Trade Committee to promote bilateral trade and the Terms of Reference for an Agriculture Working Group.

According to State House, this MoU is aimed at enhancing agricultural cooperation between the two nations.

Additionally, an MoU was signed to foster tourism collaboration, encouraging more Dutch tourists to visit Kenya and increasing Dutch investment in Kenya’s tourism sector.

On the other hand, the Letter of Intent issued by Dutch company Invest International, commits Ksh423 million to fund Naivasha Special Economic Zone Water Supply and Sanitation Project and the Sabaki Bulk Water Supply Project.
