Two suspects have been arrested following a violent robbery at Shawal Petrol Station along Mandera Road in Wajir township.

In a statement on Thursday, March 20, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects were apprehended after police swiftly responded to a distress call during the incident.

Authorities say a gang of five, dressed in jungle uniforms, stormed the petrol station, overpowering the watchman and pump attendant before tying their hands with ropes.

According to the DCI, the assailants then made off with Ksh30,000 in cash.

"The suspects, identified as 49-year-old John Mwaura and his 28-year-old accomplice Muia Mutuku, were nabbed after a distress call alerted officers of an ongoing heist at the said petrol station.

"Acting swiftly, officers arrived at the scene and discovered that a gang of five thugs, clad in jungle uniforms, impersonating police officers, had stormed the petrol station overpowering the watchman and pump attendant, tying their hands with ropes before making off with Ksh30,000 in cash," the statement read.

The swift police response resulted in a dramatic chase, leading to the arrest of Mwaura and Mutuku.

“However, their escape was short-lived as the officers hotly pursued them leading to the arrest of the two who were swiftly cornered and taken into custody," the statement added.

During the arrest, police recovered a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military jungle trouser and a military jungle jacket, among other items.

The two suspects are currently in police custody, undergoing processing ahead of their court appearance.

Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the three accomplices who remain at large.

“The suspects are currently undergoing processing pending their court appearance. Meanwhile, the hunt continues for the trio still at large,” the statement concluded.
