Waititu was sentenced on February 13 to serve 12 years in jail or an alternative fine of Ksh53.5 million.

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has suffered a blow after the court directed that he would remain in custody for one month.

High Court Judge, Justice Lucy Njuguna on Wednesday, March 26, ruled that Waititu will remain in custody until April 23, 2025, when the court will issue a ruling on whether he could amend his appeal.

On March 3, Justice Njuguna denied Waititu his request for bail pending the determination of his appeal against a corruption conviction over not presenting sufficient grounds to warrant his release.

Waititu through his lawyer Kibe Mungai on March 11 made a second attempt to be released on bail arguing there was insufficient evidence to prove he is guilt in the Ksh588 million corruption case.

The former Kiambu governor was on February 13 sentenced to serve 12 years in jail or an alternative fine of Ksh53.5 million.

"Ex-Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu has been slapped with a Ksh51 million mandatory fine by the courts following his conviction in a conflict-of-interest case. If he fails to pay up, the Governor will serve 7 years in prison. Further, Waititu has been sentenced to 5 years in prison or pay a separate fine of Ksh. 2.5 million,” ODPP said in a statement.

Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari, were found guilty of conflict of interest and dealing with suspect property offences after corruptly receiving millions from Kiambu county through a multi-million roads tender.

Wangari was sentenced to serve a jail term of one year if she defaults in paying the Ksh500,000 fine.
