Uhuru attended the meeting alongside four other facilitators of the DRC peace process.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, May 17, held a meeting with African Union (AU) Mediator Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé in Lome, Togo.

Uhuru was joined by other DRC peace facilitators in the meeting including Olusegun Obasanjo, Mokgweetsi Masisi, Catherine Samba-Panza.

Former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde was also present during the meeting.

“HE President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta, alongside members of the Panel of Facilitators including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Mokgweetsi Masisi, Catherine Samba-Panza, and Sahle-Work Zewde met with AU Mediator H.E. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé in Lomé, Togo on May 17, 2025,” Uhuru’s office said in a statement.

During the high-level meeting, Gnassingbé and the facilitators emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue and cooperation among the conflicting parties and welcomed recent commitments to a peaceful resolution.

The panel also reaffirmed its collective dedication to achieving lasting stability in the DRC and the broader region.

“The AU Mediator and the Panel emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue and cooperation among the conflicting parties, welcoming recent commitments to a peaceful resolution,” the office of the 4th President of Kenya added.

Further the panel of facilitators expressed deep appreciation Gnassingbé for his leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing peace in Africa.

Uhuru and the 4 other former African heads of state were appointed on March 24 to lead the DRC peace talks.

On April 1, the facilitators held a virtual meeting chaired by President William Ruto to discuss the DRC peace talks.

The Eastern region of DRC has, in recent weeks, witnessed escalated violence, with the humanitarian situation deteriorating as the armed M23 rebels push deeper into the region.
