"This incident underscores the pressing need for police accountability and custodial safeguards."

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has condemned the circumstances surrounding the death of Albert Ojwang who died while in police custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

In a statement on Sunday, June 8, Wanga expressed deep concern over the reports and conveyed her condolences to Ojwang’s loved ones.

“I want to extend my deepest condolences to family, friends, and community of Albert Ojwang' during this unimaginably painful time. No family should suffer the loss of a loved one under such unclear and troubling circumstances, especially while in the custody of state institutions sworn to protect lives,” she said.

Wanga called for a swift and impartial investigation into the incident, urging oversight bodies to take action.

“I want to call upon the relevant agencies to hold thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the events leading to Albert's death,” she stated.

Wanga noted that police violence must not be tolerated, further calling on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite their probe.

“Police brutality has no place in our society. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) must expedite its inquiry and ensure that findings are made public.

"This incident underscores the pressing need for police accountability and custodial safeguards. We stand in solidarity with Albert's family and will offer necessary support during this time,” she added.

Earlier Sunday, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that Ojwang had been in police custody at the time of his death.

"NPS confirms that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody. While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall," the police said.

The police further explained that officers on duty took immediate action to address the situation once they realized the suspect was injured.

"Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival," the statement added.

NPS further assured the public that an independent investigation is already underway.

"In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident," the police confirmed.
