Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has issued a status report on the construction of the Talanta City Stadium, confirming that it now stands at 66% completion.
In a statement on Friday, November 14, Mvurya noted that the government expects all major external works to be completed by the end of the year.
"I have conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Talanta City Stadium, which now stands at 66% completion.
"By the end of December 2025, all exterior and major infrastructural works will be finalized, paving the way for the contractor to commence finishing works in preparation for full operationalization by February 2026," he said.

Mvurya added that various government agencies are advancing transport links, utilities, and other infrastructure to support seamless access to the facility.
"In line with the Whole-of-Government Approach, complementary works, including rail connectivity, road upgrades, utilities, and other supporting infrastructure, are progressing steadily to ensure seamless access and enhance the stadium’s wider ecosystem," he added.

Mvurya further stated that once completed, the stadium is intended to serve as a landmark development that will elevate Kenya’s ability to compete on the global sports stage and attract world-class events.
"The iconic monumental project is a cornerstone in positioning Kenya as a continental and global sporting powerhouse, elevating our capacity to host world-class events while showcasing Kenya’s excellence, ambition, and growing reputation in modern sports infrastructure development," he concluded.

This comes months after the Office of the State House Spokesperson has disclosed that Kenya will host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) opening and closing ceremonies.
In an update on Sunday, July 7, which later was reposted by former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, the office noted that the ceremonies will be held at the Talanta Sports City Stadium.
The 60,000-seater stadium is taking shape after President William Ruto launched its construction in March 2024.
"The tremendous progress in the construction of the 60,000-seater Talanta Sports City, the prime Sports Arena being built at the Jamhuri Grounds, under CS Ababu Namwamba’s Sports Ministry. This is where the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2027 Afcon will be held," read the statement by the Office of the State House Spokesperson.
In September 2023, Kenya won the bid to host the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
The three East African countries had submitted a joint bid to host the biggest football tournament in Africa and beat Senegal, Egypt, and Botswana, which had also bid to host the tournament.
The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and the Nyayo Stadium are among the stadiums that will host the prestigious tournament in 2027.
