An examiner passed away on Monday, November 24, while marking the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) exams at Machakos Girls High School.
In a statement, Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO David Njengere said the examiner, Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku, was a team leader in the Creative Arts and Sports paper.
Mutuku had been actively and diligently performing his duties since the KJSEA marking exercise began on November 7, 2025.
“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of one of our examiners for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).
“Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku passed away this morning at Machakos Girls High School, where he was a team leader in the Creative Arts and Sports paper,” read the statement in part.
Until his demise, Mutuku was a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County.
He previously served as a KNEC examiner for the now-defunct Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination before the transition to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
Njegere mourned Mutuku as an experienced and diligent teacher, adding that KNEC has lost a gem. The KNEC CEO also extended his sympathies to Mutuku’s family, friends and loved ones.
“He was an experienced, diligent teacher, and we have, indeed, lost a gem.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Mutuku’s family, friends, loved ones and fellow examiners,” Njegere added.
The KJSEA exams were conducted nationwide from Monday, October 27, to November 3, 2025. On October 29, during a briefing to Parliament on the status of ongoing national examinations, Education CS Julius Ogamba disclosed that results for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the KJSEA will be released in December.
The Education CS also stated that the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results will be released in January 2026.
