Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) has issued a notice to customers informing them of an upcoming mass installation of smart water meters across various neighbourhoods.
In a notice, ELDOWAS told customers that smart meter installation in their areas would begin on Thursday, December 11, and asked them to allow access to authorised staff.
"Dear Customer, Smart Water Meter installation in your area is scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Please grant access to our identified staff and ensure the meter is secured after installation," the notice read.
ELDOWAS said the exercise is targeting old, faulty or stopped meters as well as resizing needs, explaining that the upgrade would lead to proper meter function, accurate usage data, reliable service and reduced water losses.
"The exercise targets aged, faulty and stopped meters as well as meter resizing. As a result, this will ensure, among other things, proper meter functioning and management of flow rates, accuracy of your water usage data (including meter reading and billing accuracy), reliable and efficient water services, reduction of non-revenue water, and compliance with Water Services Regulations," an earlier notice read.

ELDOWAS added that customers will receive prior notice through SMS, physical notices or direct communication before any staff visit.
"You will be notified in advance via SMS, notices or direct contact before ELDOWAS visits your premises for installation," the notice further read.

ELDOWAS also outlined what customers should expect during the installation, stating that the meters will be provided free of charge, staff must be identifiable, suspicious activity should be reported immediately and customers must secure their meters to prevent tampering or theft.
"The meters will be installed and sealed at no cost to the customer; during the visit, the ELDOWAS team MUST be identifiable through ELDOWAS staff IDs; should you encounter any suspicious or doubtful activity or persons, immediately notify the company; customers are expected to secure the meters to prevent unauthorized meter tampering, fraud/manipulation and theft," the notice concluded.
This comes days after ELDOWAS announced a temporary water supply disruption beginning Tuesday, December 16, at 9:00 a.m. until Thursday, December 18, at 9:00 p.m.
According to the company, the shutdown is necessary to allow for scheduled maintenance at the Chebara Water Treatment Plant.
"This is to inform you that the water supply from the Chebara Treatment Plant will be temporarily interrupted. The water supply interruption will begin on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. and continue until Thursday, December 18th, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. The interruption is to facilitate essential routine maintenance," the notice read.
ELDOWAS further noted that water bowser services will be unavailable during the same period.
"During this period, the water bowser services will also be unavailable; however, the other water treatment plants will remain operational to ensure the continuity of water supply to unaffected areas," the notice added.
