Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has praised 22-year-old environmentalist Truphena Muthoni following her successful completion of a 72-hour tree-hugging challenge that set a new world record.
In a statement on Thursday, December 11, Passaris commended Muthoni's remarkable achievement, highlighting the courage and determination required to complete such an extraordinary feat.
"Dear Truphena Muthoni, the last time I hugged a tree...well, let's just say it didn't last 72 hours. But you did, and I applaud you for the courage, the strength, but most of all, the audacity; the audacity to silence the noise, to follow the drumbeat of your heart, the audacity to speak for the environment without even saying a word. I truly admire it," Passaris wrote.
The Woman Representative expressed regret at not being able to witness the record-breaking moment in person, explaining that she was representing Kenya at the EALA Games in Uganda during the challenge.
"I would have loved to come and witness your victory, but I am away representing our country at the EALA Games in Uganda. I'd be happy to hear more about your cause, and if this is you at 22, I cannot wait to see what more you will bring to the world. God bless you, and God bless our environment. Yours faithfully, Audacious!" Passaris added.

Muthoni completed her 72-hour tree-hugging marathon at the Nyeri County Governor's office, surpassing her previous record of 48 hours and 22 minutes that she achieved at Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi in February 2025.

The challenge, which began on Tuesday, December 8, 2025, at 12:20 p.m., was aimed at raising awareness about indigenous trees, indigenous communities, and inclusivity for persons with disabilities. Muthoni incorporated a three-hour blindfold experience during the attempt to simulate visual impairment and draw attention to disability inclusion.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who monitored her progress throughout the challenge, confirmed that Muthoni would undergo medical checks following the completion of the record.
"After she's done, we will take her to the hospital for check up, just to make sure everything is fine. Then she will later join us at the youth conference that is ongoing," the Governor stated.
He also shared his perspective on the benefits of tree hugging, noting, "I don't know if people know this, but when you hug a tree, it cleanses you. If you are sick and you hug a tree, it purifies you."
The record attempt garnered significant support from various organizations and individuals, including a KSh 1 million pledge from OdiBets, a three-night Mombasa holiday from Adequate Safaris, and a Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 from Damaris of Dama Spares Original.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also encouraged Muthoni's conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of her work in environmental conservation and mental health awareness.
