Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced it had awarded a Ksh17 billion highway project to a Chinese company.
On Monday KENHA signed the Ksh17 billion deal with the Chinese company for the construction of 196km Lamu-Ijara-Garissa road.
In a ceremony hosted on Monday, April 19, KeNHA Director General Peter Mundinia signed the tender of the project that will be completed in 36 months.
The Government will spend Ksh25 billion on the construction of two major roads in Lamu County which will be 250 kilometres.
The two roads will connect the Lamu port with the southern part of Ethiopia. KeNHA said 15km part of the road be from Hindi to Kiunga and the remaining 100km will be from Ijara to Hulugho in Garissa County.

KeNHA Chairman Wangai Ndirangu said the two security roads had already been budgeted for in the current Financial Year.
Earlier this month the National Land Commission was ordered to convene a meeting within 45 days to determine the compensation due to a proprietor of land acquired for the construction of the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport Corridor (Lapsset) project.
The Environment and Land Court ordered an injunction be issued upon the expiry of the 45-day period restraining NLC, Lapsset Corridor Development Authority and Kenya Ports Authority from remaining on the parcel of land which belongs to Nightshade Properties Ltd.
The court noted that the fact that compensation had not been paid does not invalidate the process of compulsory acquisition.
