A food eating competition in Sikura Primary School in Butula, Busia County turned tragic after one of the participants collapsed and died.
The participant, Harrison Oduor Ouma suddenly choked on a piece of bread and collapsed.
Confirming the incident, Butula sub-county police chief Jacob Chelimo said the pupil was rushed to Buluani dispensary following the incident, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“He was choked by the piece of bread that stuck in his throat and fell unconscious and failed to respond to first aid assistance from teachers and fellow pupil
"The school management rushed him to hospital but he was pronounced dead," Chelimo stated.
The incident sparked mixed reactions on social media with a section of users calling out the school administration for organising such competitions.
"While schools in developing countries are organising Hackathons, and musicals, schools in Butula, Busia ,are hosting Bread eating competitions. Sikura Primary school principal should be held responsible for the death," Ratego Juma posed.
In 2020, teacher in Kipkelion District, Kericho County, survived death by a whisker after he choked on dry bread during an eating completion.
A local publication reported that the teacher threw his hat in the ring to battle it out with other contestants for a smartphone during a marketing promotion in Kericho town.
However, the tutor ran short of saliva and began to weirdly contort his face as he struggled to swallow a huge chunk of bread.
It took the intervention of his colleagues to save him.
