Maranda School has issued a mandatory instruction to its students requiring them to undergo drug and substance tests at a public Nacada health facility as part of their readmission.
Furthermore, in a memo to parents, students will be required to pay sh5,125 each before reporting on Monday, January 3, 2022, from a student population of over 2,000 students.
The amount is to assist with reconstructing the damaged dormitory that was blazed down during the school unrest.

"All the students to undergo a mandatory drug and substance test while at home. This must be done in a public health facility or NACADA. Subsequently, there shall be random tests of drugs and substances conducted in and by the school. All fees, including the charges for reconstruction, must be cleared before readmission," the letter read in part.
The students will be required to be accompanied by their parents when reporting back, and the students will return in batches as Form Two students will stay at home as the dormitory is being rebuilt.
On Sunday, November 7, Maranda High School was closed indefinitely after a fire razed down one dormitory. Six students were arrested in connection with the fire incident.
According to Siaya County Director of Education Nelson Sifuna, the six were captured moving around during the initial stages of the fire.
"After scrutinizing CCTV footage, there were six students seen moving around the dormitory, the six of them have been picked as suspects and handed over to security agencies for further interrogations," Sifuna stated.
