President-elect William Ruto now controls both houses; the National Assembly and the Senate. 

President-elect William Ruto has congratulated Moses Wetang'ula and Amason Kingi after being elected speakers of the National Assembly and Senate respectively. 

In a message via social media platforms on Thursday, September 8, Ruto noted that he had confidence they would serve the country with purpose and distinction. 

The President-elect also commended Gladys Shollei and Kathuri Murungi who were elected deputy speakers in the National Assembly and Senate respectively. 

"I salute Members of Parliament for trusting Kenya Kwanza to provide leadership in both Houses; a clear indication of our national support. Congratulations to Moses Wetang’ula and Amason Kingi on your election as speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate respectively.

"Well in Gladys Shollei and Kathuri Murungi as deputy speakers. Your elevation is a clear demonstration of Kenya Kwanza's support. I have tremendous faith that you will serve the people of Kenya with purpose and distinction," Ruto stated.

Former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi was elected the new Senate Speaker after he garnered 46 votes to clinch the position.

Azimio la Umoja candidate Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew from the speaker's race at the last minute. 

Former Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula was elected the National Assembly speaker after Azimio candidate Kenneth Marende conceded after the first round. 

In the first round, the former Bungoma Senator garnered 215 votes against Azimio la Umoja coalition candidate Marende who got 130 votes.

The voting would have gone to the second round but Marende wrote to the clerk saying he would not take part in the second round.
