The Head of State has sent out an appeal to all universities.

President William Ruto has urged universities to allow students to sit for their end-of-semester examinations pending the disbursement of funds by the government.

Speaking on Friday, December 6, during the graduation ceremony of Scott Christian University in Machakos County, President Ruto asked the universities to exercise patience and understanding with the students.

The Head of State cited challenges in the transition to the new higher education funding model, maintaining that additional challenges posed by litigation may disrupt its implementation.

“As we navigate the changes brought about the transition to the student-centered higher education funding model, I urge universities to exercise patience and understanding with students. The spirit of human confederation is especially critical given the additional challenge posed by litigation, which could disrupt the implementation of the model.

“Therefore, I appeal to universities to allow students to sit for their end-of-semester examinations while awaiting the resumption of full disbursements once the process gives direction on the matter,” President Ruto remarked.

His remarks come after the Universities Fund (UF) disclosed that it is exploring all legal avenues to reach a resolution after the High Court suspended the implementation of the new higher education funding model.

In a notice to its stakeholders on October 17, UF maintained that it is working closely with the Ministry of Education to find an amicable solution.

"We recognize concerns surrounding the court order issued by Justice Chacha Mwita on October 3, 2024, regarding the implementation of the New Funding Model for university students.

“We understand this situation may create uncertainty and we want to reassure you that we are actively working with the Ministry of Education to explore all legal avenues for an amicable and constructive resolution,” UF stated.
