Kenya Revenue Authority has broken silence on an incident where its officials allegedly harassed a couple at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Reports indicate that the couple was bullied by KRA officials after being in possession of a wedding dress valued at Sh300,000.
In a statement, KRA regretted the incident and confirmed that it indeed happened in September 2023.
"We empathize with the frustration and inconveniences such situations may cause and reiterate that we do not condone any form of abuse or harassment by our officers," KRA said.
KRA explained that the wedding dress cost exceeded the value that is exempted from taxation and such, the couple had to pay tax.

"The wedding dress in question was valued at $2000 (Sh300,000), which exceeded the allowable limit of $500 (Sh75, 000) for duty-free items. According to the relevant customs laws, it was indeed subject to duty," KRA noted.
KRA noted that upon understanding the tax requirements, the couple paid the necessary taxes and complied with the regulations.
"We are grateful for their cooperation," KRA stated.
"KRA is responsible for implementing the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA) and other relevant tax laws."
As per the law, new items/goods up to the value of USD 500 for each traveler are exempted from import tax.
"We aim to uphold these regulations fairly and consistently for the benefit of our country and its citizens."
KRA asked Kenyans that if they ever feel that they have been subjected to harassment or mistreatment by any of its officials, they should report the incident.
