Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has admitted that he made a critical mistake in the 2022 elections by fully trusting President William Ruto.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, February 4, he acknowledged that his trust in Ruto was misplaced which made him join UDA instead of going with their own party as Mt Kenya region.
"We have learnt a bitter lesson and the mistake is mine because I fully trusted President William Ruto but he was not forthright. So, another day, we will be more careful and I'm listening to the people on what we need to do so that another time we don't find ourselves in the position that we are in at this time," he said.
Additionally, Gachagua questioned Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s decision to dissolve his Amani National Congress (ANC) party and merge with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The former DP suggested that Mudavadi may have miscalculated by giving up his party, especially considering the challenges he faced within UDA.

"I don't know why Musalia Mudavadi decided to fold his party and join UDA because he would have seen the problems that we the people of Mt. Kenya had in UDA; however, that's his own problem and we can't tell him what to do," Gachagua said.
During the same interview, Gachagua claimed that Ruto offered him Ksh 2 billion to resign from his position as deputy president.
He said other than the money, he would be entitled to a security detail, receive a salary and would have a chance to run for a political seat in the future.
“The President told me, 'just resign, and I will give you two billion shillings so you can go home, rest, do your own things, have security, receive a salary, and you can run again for office in the future,” he said.
However, Gachagua said he turned down the offer as he was not willing to listen to someone who was plotting against him.
“I asked myself, can someone who is plotting against you offer you a solution on how to live? If you see someone planning bad things for you, the path they tell you to take is the one you should avoid,” he stated.
