The president eulogised Chebukati as an intelligent public servant who would not entertain being compromised in his duties.

President William Ruto has accepted the request to rename a school in Trans Nzoia after Wafula Chebukati.

Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau had requested the president to sanction the expansion and development of the Sabata Secondary School, after which it could be renamed the "Wafula Chebukati Centre of Excellence."

"My request, we have got the Sabata Secondary School. We have challenges of land. My request is that if we could get additional land and call that school "Wafula Chebukati Centre of Excellence and put structures and infrastructure, including an ICT centre," Bisau said.

The president, while addressing the mourners, pledged to take over the development of the school, after which it will be renamed after the former IEBC chairman.

"We will change its name, and I will help you build the school in honour of this patriotic servant of Kenya. I will construct 15 classes in that school and also put an ICT centre you have requested," Ruto promised.

The president eulogised Chebukati as an intelligent public servant who surmounted pressure and efforts of blackmail to deliver what he believed was the best for the country.

According to him, Chebukati's tenure at the IEBC was clean and in strict accordance with the law.

Ruto referenced the former IEBC chairman's tough stances during the general elections he presided over.

According to Ruto, Chebukati set the bar high as regards how electoral processes are undertaken, further praising him for emulating and employing technology in the management of the elections.

"He was intelligent, courageous, and a man of great integrity. Chebukati is a hero of our nation, and I say so as the president of Kenya, without any fear of contradiction. He, throughout his life, demonstrated great leadership and integrity. He did the right thing and could not be confused, threatened, or blackmailed; he did the right thing," Ruto said.

Chebukati died on February 20, after months of illness.

He is survived by his widow, Mary Wanyonyi, and their three children.
