Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced the restructuring of its editorial and newsroom leadership in a bid to accelerate digital innovation and enhance audience engagement across its platforms in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya.
In a memo addressed to editorial staff on Thursday, April 17, the Editor-In-Chief, Joe Ageyo, announced the introduction of new roles as well as the renaming of existing positions.
Among the most notable developments is the introduction of the Executive Editor, Digital Innovation, a position created to lead the Group's digital strategy across all newsrooms in the region.
According to the memo, Victor Mushi has been appointed to this role and will remain based in Tanzania.
The publishing workflows for print and digital platforms have been consolidated under a new role dubbed Managing Editor, Publishing, which will be headed by Washington Gikunju.

At the same time, several roles have been renamed, including Managing Editor, Production, which has been renamed Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media, a position now held by James Smart.
Lead Editor, Print has now become Lead Editor, Production, and taken over by John Kiplagat, while ME, Content Hubs has been rebranded to Managing Editor, Content Strategy, with Harry Misiko appointed to the role.

Additionally, a new content hub named Climate & Young Audiences has been launched with Zeynab Wandati picked to lead this unit.
The restructuring also led to the abolishment of the Managing Editor, Audience and Engagement role, with its responsibilities redistributed across the newsroom.
Other key leadership changes include Alex Ndegwa assuming the consolidated role of Lead Editor, Daily Nation, and Mike Owuor taking over as Lead Editor, Weekend.
On the other hand, Jackson Mutinda has been appointed Lead Editor, The EastAfrican, overseeing both print and digital editions of the publication.
Caroline Njung’e, who was previously Chief Production Editor, is now the Chief Quality Editor and will be in charge of quality assurance for all content across platforms.
Further, Doreas Odumbe has been named Editor, Health & Gender, having previously served as Gender Editor, while Kennedy Kimanthi, formerly the Regional Editor in Nakuru, has been transferred to Nairobi to become the News Editor at the Integrated News Desk.
Brygettes Ngana, who has been a reporter in the Sustainability Hub, is now the Regional Editor, Nakuru, while Patrick Lang’at, who served as Weekend Editor, has been redesignated as Weekend & Planning Editor.
Ageyo said that the changes are necessary to keep pace with the evolving media landscape and reiterated the company's commitment to continuous evaluation and adaptation.
