The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has directed students who registered for the loans as minors to update their details in the portal.
According to a notice released on Friday, July 11, the agency explained that beneficiaries who initially used their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) index numbers to register their Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal accounts can now seamlessly update their details without creating new accounts.
How to Update Your ID Details:
Loan applicants who have finally acquired their national identification numbers (IDs) should log into their HEF portal using their KCSE index numbers.
Once in, a pop-up prompt will automatically appear asking you to update your ID details.

You are then required to enter your ID number and first name exactly as they appear on your National ID card, before clicking ‘validate’.
Once validated, the portal will confirm that the ID has been successfully updated. You will then click on the ‘register tab to complete the process.
HELB further cautioned users against opening new accounts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the original portal registered using the KCSE index number.
“Do not create a new account. Simply update the one you opened using your index number with your National ID details,” the notice read in part.

This directive comes days after the board addressed several complaints from students who received error messages that blocked them from a smooth application process.
On July 7, HELB revealed that some applicants were being locked out with error notifications stating their ID had already been activated on another device.
To address the growing issue, the board advised affected students to contact the support team through the provided official communication channels, aiming to streamline the application process ahead of the September intake for 2024 KCSE candidates joining university and college.
