Nairobi County Government has directed property owners to repaint and clean their buildings within 14 days.

The Nairobi County Government has directed property owners, tenants, and management agents to repaint and clean their buildings within 14 days.

In a notice on Tuesday, October 7, the county government warned that property owners who fail to comply with the directive will face tough penalties, including closure and prosecution.

In the directive, signed by Acting County Secretary Godfrey Akumali, the county emphasized that all premises within the Central Business District (CBD), Westlands, Upper Hill, Ngara, Kirinyaga Road, and all designated shopping centers must immediately undergo repainting and general sanitation to meet public health and housing standards

“This notice takes effect immediately and remains valid for fourteen days only. Failure to comply will result in statutory closure orders and prosecution in line with Sections 115, 118, and 126 of the Public Health Act,” the notice read in part.

According to Nairobi County, the directive, which is anchored on the Public Health Act (Cap 242) and the Physical and Land Use Planning Act (2019), is aimed at restoring the city’s aesthetic appeal while safeguarding public health.

City Hall also announced that Governor Johnson Sakaja has waived the ordinary fees for repainting permits to ease compliance.

The notice follows a motion passed by the Nairobi County Assembly aimed at uplifting the city’s status by ensuring that old buildings are repainted.

This comes months after Governor Sakaja issued a similar directive requiring building owners in Nairobi CBD to repaint their buildings.

Speaking on January 19, 2025, at the Church of Christ Africa in Buruburu, Governor Sakaja ordered the building owners to ensure their properties are repainted within 90 days.

“To everyone who has a building in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), we are issuing a circular tomorrow directing that all those buildings must be repainted in 90 days. In 90 days, we must have a fresh coat of paint, while the rest of us will work on restoring roads within Nairobi,” said Governor Sakaja.
