Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has recalled all police officers on leave and off duty to report back to work.

In a statement on Friday, Mutyambai noted that the officers should report back to work on or before November 15, 2021.

He directed regional police commanders to ensure the directive is fully implemented.

Mutyambai’s statement comes a few hours after president Uhuru Kenyatta called for heightened vigilance among security agencies.

President Kenyatta directed internal security institutions to heighten vigilance and surveillance across the country following the unfolding security situation in the region.

The Head of State gave the instructions during Friday's National Security Council meeting.

President Kenyatta spoke in relation to the civil unrest experienced in the Eastern Africa region especially in Ethiopia and Tigrey regions and the neighbouring Somalia.

Last week, President Kenyatta and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the escalating security situation in Tigrey.

"Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta today to discuss regional security issues of mutual interest, including the situation in Ethiopia. The Secretary thanked the President for his continued leadership to promote peace and prosperity in the region,” the statement read in part.

Blinken is expected to visit Kenya this month and will meet with President Kenyatta. He had visited Kenya virtually in April.

The announcement by President Kenyatta also comes days after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) put a Ksh10 million bounty each on five terror suspects.
