Businessman Jimi Wanjigi has raised concerns over the upcoming ODM party National Delegates Convention (NDC).
In a statement, the businessman demanded an explanation as to why elections to nominaye the party's presidential candidate was not listed as part of the NDC's agenda.
Wanjigi is seeking to dethrone ODM leader Raila Odinga to contest for the country's top seat under the ODM ticket.
"The deliberate omission of conducting elections to nominate the party’s presidential candidate from the agenda items listed in your notice calling for the delegates meeting exposes the party to the risk of not nominating its presidential candidate for the first time since its inception 15 years ago against the dictates of the Constitution," Wanjigi noted.
He, however, noted that the attempt to lock him out of the party did not come as a surprise as the party has been operating in an unusual manner since he announced his presidential bid.
"I am not shocked by the action of the party since from the time I announced my bid in 2021, the party has been operating in an opaque manner not responding to my constant pleas," Wanjigi added.
In November 2021, Wanjigi threatened to leave ODM over unfair nomination rules sating it was wrong for the party to adopt consensus route for nominations when the party constitution was saying voters must be involved.
“The party constitution says the nominations are done through the delegate system and you cannot abdicate that,” Wanjigi said.
He also said before leaving the party, he will demand for his contribution to be refunded.
“You cannot just leave like that. We have invested heavily in this party and we must be refunded," he added.
