The year 2024 saw a number of young Kenyans coming out to call out the government and demand better governance.

In this article, Nairobileo.co.ke takes a look at five youthful Kenyans who made headlines in 2024.

Morara Kebaso

The activist and civic educator took the internet by storm after he launched a nationwide tour to inspect the progress of projects launched by President William Ruto.

Morara became a prominent figure when he revealed that many projects launched by the Head of State had been abandoned, despite consuming hundreds of millions of Kenyan shillings.

His activism stood out due to its unique approach, as he mimicked President Ruto’s style and demeanor.

Morara dressed in Kaunda suits and recorded videos while standing on car rooftops, mirroring one of President Ruto's signature moves. He also created mock "address to the nation" videos, standing behind a podium equipped with a coat of arms and an iPad.

To support his nationwide civic education campaign, Morara acquired a modified Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX and a sound system, funded by contributions from Kenyans.

His videos sparked mixed reactions online, with some commending his courage and others cautioning that it was a risky endeavor.

In an interview, Morara stated that he is unafraid of being targeted by state agents, asserting that he understands the law and firmly believes he is not breaking any.

Kasmuel McOure

Kasmuel McOure, popularly known as Kaskazini, rose to prominence during the anti-finance protests, gaining recognition for his sharp debating skills and deep understanding of national issues and governance.

In a past interview, MCoure revealed his ambition to run for a political seat in the 2027 general election. Recently, he joined the ODM party.

Hanifa Aden

The activist and journalist played a leading role in the anti-government protests, using social media to rally the youth to express their dissatisfaction with high taxes and poor governance.

She also organized a fundraising effort, mobilizing Kenyans both locally and in the diaspora to contribute toward supporting victims of the anti-Finance Bill protests. Through her efforts, she raised Ksh31,663,580.

In an audit of the contributions, Hanifa disclosed that the funds were distributed to 208 individuals and families who were affected during the demonstrations.

Mercy Tarus

The young activist woman first gained national attention in 2023 when she confronted Uasin Gishu leaders over the fraudulent Finland and Canada education program.

In 2024, she was among the young Kenyans who took part in anti-government protests, demanding the withdrawal of the Finance Bill and advocating for better governance under President Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration.

Tarus also appeared on various local TV and radio stations, where she openly criticized the government and highlighted pressing national issues.

In addition, she started the Kenya ni Home initiative, aimed at providing civic education to Kenyans.

Anita Barasa

Anita came to the light at the height of anti-finance bill protests when she asked Azimio leader Raila Odinga to stay at home because he was going to be represented on the streets by the young generation.

“Raila, this is a message to you, don’t come. Please stay at home. We saw your efforts and everything that you did for Kenya. We miss you but don’t come outside. Tunatoka on your behalf," the lady stated.

Raila, in response, said he was a proud father and commended the youths who came out to exercise their democratic rights during the demos.

"I'm a very proud father today! Hongera sana to the young lady and all those who bravely stood up for their rights,” said the former prime minister.

Shakira Wafula

The fearless young woman made headlines after confronting a police officer during the protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
