The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has given all its prepaid customers until the end of August to update their meters.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 12, KPLC noted that the update was part of an ongoing global exercise that targets all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), which is a universal method of token transfer to prepaid meters while ensuring the security of tokens.
Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of the rollout of the free token meter update, Kenya Power CEO Dr. Eng. Joseph Siror said that customers will be sent two codes via SMS.
The first code will be a reset code, while the second code will be an update code. They will be required to enter the code starting with the reset code.
The prepaid customers were urged to ensure that all previously purchased tokens were loaded to their meters before keying in the codes.

"In other instances, the company will send the codes directly to the customers who haven't purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters. The process is simple and free," Dr. Eng. Siror remarked.
According to Dr. Siror, all meters that would not have been updated by the deadline will stop accepting tokens.
"A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens. Because of this, we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully empowered and assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services," Dr. Eng. Siror said.
Kenya Power maintained that the update will not impact the existing tokens already loaded in the meter.
The company will monitor the exercise to identify and address emerging issues.
