“I said the church is protected by the constitution and protects the right of every Kenyan to profess any kind of religion," Raila Odinga.

Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga has clarified his remarks about Christianity in a video clip that went viral.

Speaking in Machakos County on Friday, July 29, the former Prime Minister said that he was not discriminating against Christianity.

Raila said that all religions in the country were being protected by the constitution and he was for the protection of the rights of every religion.

He said that Muslims were being discriminated against when looking for documents in state departments and he was calling for the end of that discrimination.

Raila said the discrimination came about due to roots in colonialism adding that his remarks were based on the historical context.

“I was addressing a group of Muslim women who were complaining about discrimination when they apply for passports or ID cards. I have seen that discrimination. I didn't want to use this against Christianity.

"The church is protected by the constitution. The constitution of this country protects the right of every Kenyan to profess any kind of religion and all regions are protected. We are going to protect the constitution and by doing so we will be protecting the rights of Christians, Hindus, and Muslims as equal Kenyans," Odinga.

In the viral clip, the former Prime Minister said that when colonialists were in Kenya, Christianity was elevated than other religions and his administration will end that.

“Wakati wazungu walikuwa hapa, Kenya ukristo ulipelekwa juu kushinda dini zingine. Na hiyo kasumba imebaki mpaka leo. Tutaimaliza,” he said.
