4 major food items, including cooking oil, are set to increase in prices this month, a report by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) shows.

In its Agriculture Survey report released on Wednesday, April 16, CBK also listed maize, sugar and tomatoes in the list.

According to the report, maize and tomato prices in April will be higher than those of March due to seasonality.

"Tomato prices are expected to increase mainly reflecting an expected decline in supply as a result of the long rains," read the report in part.

"Respondents expect the prices of maize products and related items to be relatively higher in April 2025 relative to March 2025, mainly reflecting seasonal patterns."

Meanwhile, CBK explained that the prices of sugar and cooking oil would increase because of the rise in global prices.

"In addition, respondents expected the prices of sugar, cooking fat and cooking oil (salad) to also pick up, reflecting developments in the global market where prices of these items have been rising in the recent past," CBK reported.

The increase in supply was credited to the long rains that had been witnessed across the country in recent weeks.
