The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has announced vacancies in the positions of Deputy Inspector General, of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS) and Deputy Inspector General, of the Administration Police Service (DIG-APS).
In a notice on Saturday, July 13, NPSC invited applications from qualified police officers for the two positions.
“Pursuant to Article 246(3)[a], 245[3] and 232(1)(g) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Section 13 and 14 of the National Police Service Act No.11A of 2011 (Revised 2017) as read with Executive Order No. 7 of 2024 vide Notification of Presidential Action (1)-12/07/2024, the National Police Service Commission invites applications from suitably qualified serving police officers who wish to be considered,” read the notice in part.
Requirements for the DIG-KPS and DIG-APS positions include; being a Kenyan citizen, holding a degree from a university recognized in Kenya or equivalent qualifications, having a distinguished career in their respective fields, meeting the requirements of chapter six of the Constitution, and serving as police officer of the rank of Assistant Inspector General (AIG) and above.
The applicants must have also served in the Police Service for at least fifteen years and have knowledge and experience in criminal justice; policy development and implementation; finance and public administration, strategic management, security, law sociology, or Government.

The role of DIG-KPS involves effective and efficient day-to-day administration and operations of the Kenya Police Service, implementation of policies and directions of the Service in relation to the Kenya Police Service, preparation of the budget, planning, and provision of support for the Kenya Police Service.
The DIG-KPS should also perform other duties as may be assigned by the Inspector-General or the NPSC.
DIG-APS on the other hand heads the Administration Police Service and is subject to the direction, command, and control of the Inspector General for effective and efficient day-to-day administration and operations of the Administration Police Service including providing strategic guidance and direction for the Administration Police Service and preparing the budget, planning and provision of support for the Administration Police Service.

Each application should be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of relevant academic and professional testimonials, and other relevant supporting documents. Scanned copies of these documents must accompany an online application.
The applications should also be clearly marked "application for the position of Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service or application for the position of Deputy Inspector General Administration Police Service".
The applications should be addressed to the Chairperson of the National Police Service Commission.
Manual applications should be hand-delivered to the office of the Commission Secretary/Chief Executive Officer situated on the 9th floor of CBK Pension Towers. The deadline for the application is on July 17 2024 by 5.00 pm.
This comes a day after Japhet Koome resigned as the Inspector General of Police and DIG-KPS Douglas Kanja was appointed by President Ruto to the position in an acting capacity.
President Ruto also redeployed DIG-APS Noor Gabow within the Public Service.
