"We will jointly raise this issue during the COMESA Trade Ministers Meeting in Lusaka next week."

Trade, Industry and Investment CS Moses Kuria has threatened to slap Egypt with exercise duties on commodities they export into the country.

In a statement, Kuria raised concern with the country saying it is unfair for them to continue subsidising their companies adding that Kenya will not hesitate to take action against them.

The CS further said they will table the issue in the next Comesa meeting to seek a lasting solution to the matter,

"It is unfair for Egypt to continue subsidising their companies that are exporting duty-free to the COMESA region. Kenya will join Uganda in imposing Excise duties on such products. We will jointly raise this issue during the COMESA Trade Ministers Meeting in Lusaka next week," he said.

Egypt is a member country of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and is allowed to export its good for free into the region.

All member countries, Kenya included are allowed to export their goods duty-free in the region.

Kenya is among the countries that apply 100 per cent tariff reductions meaning goods being imported from Egypt do not attract duty.
